Nostalgia

"Everything old becomes new again"

That is an adage that people in fashion and entertainment have created careers on. And while I am desperate for parachute pants and skinny ties to make a comeback, that is not why I am writing this post. Why I am writing is that I have noticed a swell of television and movies that are dated in my era - the 1980's.

Why is this? Well, I suppose it is for a few reasons.

First, it is easier to pitch something that has a proven track record. Granted, it is not a guaranteed hit, however, it has an automatic leg up on the competition when it has already had a successful run.

Second, there is a built in audience. If a cartoon from my era, say Thundercats or He-Man, get revamped and put on the big screen, the little boy in me automatically wants to see the film, so they have me. Then, there is a whole generation of little boys who want to see it now.

Finally, cross merchandising is way easier because the characters are already engrained in the public consciousness. Box office returns aren't the only revenue...action figures, food promotions, shirts...are multi-million dollar money makers.

Some of the more notable remakes of late that have been immensely popular are the British icon, Dr. Who and the cult favorite, Battlestar Galactica. There have been a few bombs...Knight Rider and Bionic Woman...but for the most part, the track record is solid.

Anyhow, here are a few of the up and coming television and movie remakes that have caught my attention.

V

G.I. Joe

Then there is this little gem - Saved By the Bell

Really looking forward to "V" as well. Loved it the first time around, and this looks pretty good.

Everything I'm hearing about GI Joe points towards 'SUX', but who knows. THe rumor is that the director got canned in the editing room.

Also put the A-Team on your list of remakes. Liam Neeson as Hannibal.

Dear Jay, regarding Battlestar Galactica. I have family connections! I know the producer. He is my husband's mother's brother's wife's sister's husband...AKA Uncle Harker Wade.

P.S. he also helped to produce Knight Rider and Quantum Leap.
P.P.S...that makes me VERY Important!
P.P.P.S. he was at the wedding, but you split to the hotel too soon, therefore rendering me unable to introduce you..your loss!!!
Love your very important baby sister, ANGIE
